Hungary: My Second Home

As I continue my journey of pursuing a PhD here in Hungary, I often reflect on how deeply this country has touched my life. I arrived in Hungary in July 2023, and after almost two years, it has truly become my second most lovable country after my beloved homeland, Bangladesh. Hungary has given me more than just an academic opportunity — it has offered me a life filled with meaning, dignity, and unforgettable experiences.

Geographically, Hungary is a landlocked country located in Central Europe, sharing its borders with Austria, Slovakia, Ukraine, Romania, Serbia, Croatia, and Slovenia. It is situated in the Carpathian Basin and is characterized by its diverse landscapes — from the Great Hungarian Plain to the scenic hills and beautiful lakes such as Lake Balaton, the largest lake in Central Europe. The majestic Danube River, Europe’s second-longest river, elegantly flows through the country and its vibrant capital city, Budapest.

Historically, Hungary boasts a rich and complex heritage that dates back over a thousand years. Founded in 896 by the Magyar tribes, Hungary became a Christian kingdom under King Stephen I in the year 1000. Over the centuries, Hungary played a pivotal role in European history, experiencing periods of great prosperity as well as challenges through invasions, Ottoman rule, and later integration into the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Following the hardships of two World Wars and decades under communist rule, Hungary transitioned to a democracy in 1989. Today, it is a proud member of the European Union, known for its resilience, cultural richness, and contributions to science, art, and literature.

Hungary’s stunning architecture, lively festivals, warm-hearted people, and deep cultural traditions make it an extraordinary place to live and study. From savoring traditional Hungarian dishes like gulyás (goulash) to exploring historic towns, museums, and thermal baths, every moment here adds a new layer to my life’s journey.

For me, Hungary is not just a place on the map — it is a home away from home, a chapter of growth, learning, and beautiful memories that I will cherish forever.
