For Eid-ul-Fitr 2024, I celebrated in the heart of Italy, spending five enriching days in Bologna — a city that effortlessly combines academic prestige, cultural depth, and heartfelt hospitality. My trip also took me to the dreamlike canals of Venice, the sunny shores of Rimini, and the mountaintop republic of San Marino — a journey filled with spirituality, exploration, and connection.
Flying in from Hungary with Ryanair, I was warmly welcomed in Bologna. I’ll always treasure the kindness and hospitality of Rasel Bhai and Bhabi, and Mama and Mami, who made my stay feel like being with family. Celebrating Eid with them brought a sense of home in a foreign land, and I am sincerely grateful for their generosity.
One of the most touching parts of this journey was reconnecting with Rafiq, my younger brother from our home village in Bangladesh. He traveled over 200 kilometers just to meet me in Bologna — a gesture I deeply appreciate. More than just visiting, Rafiq drove me on a full-day tour to Rimini and San Marino, taking charge of the entire trip and ensuring everything went smoothly. After the long day of travel and exploration, he even drove us back to Bologna — a true reflection of brotherhood, dedication, and love.
Together, we explored Rimini’s relaxed Adriatic coastline, then ascended to San Marino, one of the world’s oldest republics, perched atop Mount Titano. The panoramic views, historical ambiance, and quiet strength of San Marino left a deep impression on both of us.
Another unforgettable experience was my visit to Venice — the city of canals and timeless charm. From the majestic Piazza San Marco and Grand Canal to the graceful Rialto Bridge, Venice offered a poetic escape. Its beauty felt like a meditation — calm, enchanting, and enduring.
While in Bologna, I also visited the prestigious University of Bologna, founded in 1088 — the oldest university in the Western world. As a PhD student, this visit was especially meaningful. I walked through its historic arcades feeling a profound connection to the legacy of learning that has shaped so many minds across generations.
This Italian journey was more than a holiday — it was a celebration of Eid, a tribute to friendship and family, and a path of discovery through places steeped in history and beauty. But above all, it was made unforgettable by the people who were part of it — reminding me that while destinations enrich us, it’s the relationships and memories we carry that define the journey.
